Aged wine
Sveta Barbara and Crno zloto, Saint Barbara and Black gold, Malvasia Barrique and Cuvée Barrique from the Barrique series, are the wines with which the Juričić winery joined the celebration of the 100 th anniversary of the Labin Republic, the brief strike and self-management of Labin miners that took place in March and April 1921. Behind the decision to choose the patron saint of miners („Sv. Barbara“) and the name “Crno zloto”, which in Labin’s dialect (cakavica) is the synonym for coal, or karbon in the same vernacular, the exploitation of which, in this part of Istria, lasted more than two centuries, there are two types of wine: a white one belonging to the Malvasia family and a red wine, cuvée, in which, in addition to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there is also the indigenous variety known as Teran. The design of the label, reminiscent of Italian Rationalism, tells the story of the important historical event with the instantly recognisable motif of the recently restored coal mine winding tower (known in Labin as “šoht”) and with the typeface designed by A. Butti in 1930, called “Semplicità”. The choice of the cardboard box with the traditional miners’ greeting SRETNO! (good luck), the hammer and the pick, as well as the name of the producer printed in gold, is a homage to the miners’ ceremonial uniform, which was black and had golden decorations. Thus, the rich and precious local mining heritage, especially its part dating back to the period that immediately preceded the Second World War and to the beginning of the conflict, has had a successful presentation in the context of the wine offer in Labin and in its surroundings.
